The exponential increase in human population necessitated the need for exploitation of other available resources of food, other than available land. The ultimate point of focus, which can be explored for the purpose, is water.   The Fisheries Department Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is committed to play its role in making Khyber Pakhtunkhwa self sufficient in the production of white meat (fish) on sustainable basis by utilizing all available resources of water including canals, streams,  rivers, dams/reservoirs and commercial fish farms.

The administrative setup of fisheries in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was started for the first time in 1958, under the control of Director Fisheries, West Pakistan Lahore (Ministry of Agriculture) and continued as such till June 1970.
